How Biomethanation Works
The biomethanation process involves several key steps:
Feedstock Preparation: Organic materials, such as food waste, agricultural residues, or animal manure, are collected and preprocessed. This can include shredding or mixing to create a more uniform feedstock.
Anaerobic Digestion: The prepared feedstock is placed in an anaerobic digester, a sealed environment devoid of oxygen. Here, specialized microorganisms, including bacteria and archaea, break down the organic material. This process occurs in two main stages:
Acidogenesis: Organic compounds are converted into volatile fatty acids, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide.
